Degree Credit and Science Courses
The College of Science offers a number of different sequences of courses that overlap in content but not in level. Courses are generally taken in the College of Science for one of three different reasons:
- To fulfill a university requirement (e.g., students in either the College of Arts and Letters, or the College of Business, or the School of Architecture might take the course CHEM 10101, Foundations of Chemistry);
- To fulfill a college requirement (e.g., students in the College of Engineering or the College of Science typically take the course CHEM 10117, General Chemistry I or CHEM 10171, Introduction to Chemical Principles);
- To fulfill a major requirement [e.g., students majoring in Biological Sciences take either the course BIOS 20250 Classical and Molecular Genetics, or the course BIOS 20303, Fundamentals of Genetics].
Thus, it is possible for a student who has changed his or her college to have taken two courses which overlap in content. Both courses will appear on the student's transcript, but only one will count for degree credit (that is, credit counted towards completion of the student's degree requirements).
As a guideline for the student, listed below are courses which overlap considerably in content. Courses within the same group are shown in the same row; courses listed within the same column generally show a typical progression through course work. (Information provided in the table below is taken mostly from the 2006-2007 Bulletin of Information. For historical data for previous years, students are referred to previous bulletins.) In every case, only one course per group is counted for degree credit.
Students are warned not to use the groups of these tables when moving between course sequences. Students with questions should seek advice from the offering department or the College of Science office.

Special Notes
Courses taught by two different departments may also overlap in content:
- Students may not take both BIOS 40411 (Biostatistics) and MATH 20340 (Introduction to Statistics).
- For mathematics majors, degree credit is not given for both MATH 20210 (Computer Programming and Problem Solving) and CSE 20232 (C/C++ Programming).
Degree Credit and Activity Courses
- The College of Science will count a maximum of three credit hours from the following types of activity courses:
- Band (Marching and Concert),
- Orchestra,
- Chorale,
- Glee Club,
- Liturgical Choir,
- Folk Choir,
- music lessons and ensembles,
- Ballet,
- Debate,
- Social Concerns seminars (including THEO 33936-33937)
Note, no more than one credit hour total from any of these courses may be counted per semester.
Degree Credit and ROTC Courses
The College of Science will count a maximum of six credit hours of upper-level (30000- or 40000-level) ROTC courses toward the 124 credit-hour requirement. These courses will be counted as free electives.
All 10000- or 20000-level ROTC courses will not be counted toward the 124 credit-hour requirement.
