Bennett Streit, who will receive his Ph.D. in Chemistry next year, has received the American Chemical Society’s Division of Inorganic Chemistry award. As the recipient of this award, Streit will present his research on the enzyme chlorite dismutase at the Young Investigator Symposium during the American Chemical Society meeting this August in Washington, DC and will receive a monetary prize. Since 2005, Streit has been performing pioneering research on the mechanism of chlorite dismutase, an enzyme that converts chlorite, a hazardous water contaminant, into nontoxic chloride and oxygen.
Streit received a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Geneseo in 2004, and he now conducts research in the lab of Jennifer DuBois in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He has previously been awarded a three-year STAR (Science To Achieve Results) fellowship from the Environmental Protection Agency for his research on chlorite dismutase, which included a stipend and additional funds for travel and research equipment.
