Project Information for Elementary and Junior Projects
Projects should be evaluated for potential safety risk using the NIRSEF Modified Junior Project Forms. These forms are available below. Hardcopies may also be requested by contacting the Executive Director, Beth Marchant at bmarchant@comcast.net.
All elementary and junior projects must follow the ISEF guidelines for project forms and safety. Forms 1, 1A and 1B MUST be completed by all NIRSEF participants and brought to the NIRSEF.
All guidelines for human participants research must be followed and forms submitted to an IRB committee BEFORE experimentation begins. Please check with your Local Fair Coordinator regarding this.
Elementary and Junior level students (Grades 3 - 8) are DISCOURAGED from conducting research using hazardous biological materials (bacteria, DNA, fungi, molds, etc.) where the materials must be cultured. If you plan to do this research, you must do it in a BioSafety Level 2 laboratory and have all correct forms submitted to the NIRSEF Safety Review Committee (SRC) BEFORE experimentation.
Research on vertebrate animals is limited to OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES. If you wish to do an animal research project, please use invertebrates!
All Safety Review Committee (SRC) or Institutional Review Board (IRB) forms can be completed on the SEFI Project registration site or can be downloaded from the Society for Science and the Public site at: http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/document
Forms may be submitted and questions can be directed to the NIRSEF Executive Director, Beth Marchant, at:
bmarchant@comcast.net or (574) 360-1864
Elementary Student Abstract Writing Tips
Junior Student Abstract Writing Tips
Exhibitors are requested to include an abstract with their projects. The purpose of having an abstract is to provide judges at the NIRSEF and the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair an opportunity to evaluate projects early for potential safety risks and judging assignments. Information on writing an abstract is posted above.
All projects entered into the NIRSEF must have the Modified Checklist Form 1 completed. This form will indicate if students need to attend to safety guidelines as established by the Intel ISEF and followed by the NIRSEF.
