Starchenko to Speak at International Congress of Mathematicians
Sergei Starchenko, a professor in the Department of Mathematics, will speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians Aug. 19-27, 2010, in Hyderabad, India. Starchenko and his co-author, Y. Peterzil of the University of Haifa in Israel, received a joint invitation to give a talk at the Congress that meets every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union. The event includes presentations of some of the most prestigious awards in mathematics.
Starchenko, who earned a PhD in Mathematics at Novosibirsk University in the former Soviet Union in 1987, came to Notre Dame in 1997. He focuses his research on o-minimality, a model theoretic framework for tame geometry that he and Peterzil use to investigate properties of complex analytic sets. They will meet in October to plan the talk. “It is a big honor for me to speak at the Congress,” says Starchenko, who has not attended the Congress before. “I consider it as recognition of our work with Peterzil.”
