“I was very fortunate when I was here… I had a terrific science background. When I got to medical school I had no difficulty adapting to the biochemistry there. The biology background was great.”

Alumnus and physician Ted Stransky just celebrated his 40th class reunion at Notre Dame this summer. He reflects fondly upon his experience at Notre Dame which prepared him well for his career as an ophthalmologist. In his southern Indiana practice at Tri-State Ophthalmology Consultants, Stransky specializes in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. He also serves as a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Stransky has shared his knowledge and expertise with those less fortunate in the world. He served on a medical missions trip to Kingston, Jamaica where he also taught at the Kingston Public Hospital for indigent patients. He has made six medical trips to Poland, and has completed a fellowship in Belgium.  He and his wife, Ana, have four children, all of whom have graduated from Notre Dame and are quite successful.

He offers keen advice for students contemplating a health sciences career. In particular, he explains the paramount importance of good communication skills for physicians and other health care providers. He encourages all students to become well-rounded and to take advantage of the opportunities at Notre Dame.
