A team of Notre Dame researchers, led by 1960 graduate Norbert L. Wiech, have combined efforts to uncover the secrets of a compound within our cells that appears to play an important role in the onset of so-called orphan diseases, or diseases that are so rare that they do not attract the attention of pharmaceutical companies. Wiech is working with Notre Dame scientists Olaf Wiest, Martin Tenniswood, Paul Helquist, and Kevin Vaughan to investigate his new compound, CG1521. The compound seems to have a role in the way that an enzyme, called histone deactylase inhibitors, regulates how DNA expresses its genetic code for the production of proteins. Wiech’s molecule appears to arrest the development of a rare genetic disorder, called ALD, that causes the breakdown of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells in the brain.
